Public Infrastructure Management (CEE 338)
Fall 2004 |
Institute director Dave Schulz taught this management course during Northwestern University's fall quarter. The objective of the course was to convey the process of managing public infrastructure in all its complexity in sufficient detail to allow the student to gain a realistic grasp of contemporary public infrastructure management policies and practices. As part of the course, students participated in a day-long charrette exercise, where they were assigned to teams, provided with hypothetical case studies and asked to manage the public infrastructure aspects of them. |
Surveying Workshop
May 22, 2004 |
Northwestern's ASCE student chapter and the Infrastructure Technology Institute co-sponsored a workshop on surveying. Professional surveyors Fred Campeau and Joerg Feldbinder lectured the group on the essential elements of surveying, and then took the group outside and surveyed a building site. One group ran a level circuit and the other group used a total station to measure distance and angles. Every person was able to take a turn at setting up each instrument and taking shots. In the end, we were able to close the circuit horizontally and vertically. There was a discussion on errors and how to correct for them. |
Infrastructure Facilities and Systems (CEE 382)
Spring, 2004 |
Civil Engineering Professor Joseph Schofer, and ITI Director Dave Schulz taught this course during Northwestern's 2003/2004 spring quarter. This course, geared towards upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, combined a weekly lecture on infrastructure planning, design, construction, management, and monitoring with a weekly field trip to one or more Chicago area infrastructure facilities. Lectures, videos, and other materials produced for the course were made available to the students through Northwestern's internal course management system. |
Surveying and Mapping Workshop
February 7, 2004 |
The American Society of Civil Engineers, Northwestern University's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Infrastructure Technology Institute sponsored a workshop on Surveying and Mapping. Dr. Kurt Bauer, retired Executive Director of the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission and an internationally recognized expert on surveying and mapping, described the fundamentals of surveying and mapping to a group of eighteen students, faculty and staff. |
