ITI Works with National Society of Black Engineers to Support Infrastructure Education at the High School Level

November 15, 2008

The Infrastructure Technology Institute, as part of its mission to support K-12 infrastructure education initiatives, has forged a connection with the Northwestern University Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) to provide assistance for a Junior Chapter at Evanston Township High School (ETHS) in Evanston, Illinois. ITI plans to aid and encourage educational activities that reinforce the transportation infrastructure theme of ITI.

NSBE’s mission is to increase the number of African American Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. Their Pre-College Initiative (PCI) Program is designed to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, and encourage students to attend college and pursue technical degrees. The PCI program provides related activities to foster the discovery and excitement of academic excellence, leadership, technical development, and teamwork.

NSBE Northwestern’s goals for ETHS are to increase the percentage of students who go on to college (currently 45%), provide activities for the students to become engaged in engineering, and aid students throughout the college application process. This includes standardized test preparation, college admission and financial aid seminars, a variety of scholarship opportunities, and other programs to promote college admission.
