About the Tours

Download a map and audio files (MP3) for a self-guided tour of infrastructure along Wacker Drive in Downtown Chicago. Included in this tour are discussions of bridges, locks, dams, subways, roadways, the “EL” train, and water supply.

This tour is a continuously evolving project sponsored by the Infrastructure Technology Institute and executed by the Northwestern University Engineering Design and Communication classes in order to educate the public of the importance of the infrastructure necessary to sustain Chicago. The map and audio files provide a fully immersive experience of the infrastructure during a walk on Wacker drive along the Chicago River from Navy Pier to Wolf Point.

Because this is an ongoing project we are interested in user feedback. Download the tour, take the walk, and let us now how we can improve your experience. Please send comments or questions to Professor Charles Dowding.

We have provided two versions of the tour, a 4-Stop version produced in 2006 and an 11-Stop version produced in 2007. Try one or both!
